Today (July 1st) is Indie Pride Day.  What does that mean?  It means all those indie authors out there will be doing their best to hashtag and promote themselves to victory.  I wish you all the best of luck.  I am a big fan of independently published authors and read books based on their merit, not the power of their publisher.

If you didn’t know this was happening, and you are self published, you should start dropping hashtags with your work like it’s the cool thing to do (#IndiePrideDay and #IndieBooksBeSeen).

So here’s what I’m going to do.

First, I’m going to toss a literary bone to a good friend of mine M.L.S. Weech.  Weech is a fellow member of the Brown Pipe Gang (a writer’s group) and indie author.  He wrote a great post about his experience self publishing and it’s worth sharing.  You can find it here.  You can also check out his book The Journals of Bob Drifter.  You message him and he will probably sign a copy for you and sprinkle magic pixie dust on it for you too.  You can also check out his book here on GoodReads and see if it is something you would enjoy – I know I did.

Secondly, I’ve set aside 50 dollars (I know, big spender) and will purchase a copy of your digitally self published book if you leave a link to it in the comments box with a brief description for visitors to read.

Promote yourself.  Tell us about your book.  I can’t promise I will read it right this second, but I will read it eventually (and/or my wife will) and leave you a honest review.  The rub is I have only set aside 50 bucks, so it’s a first come first serve kind of deal. Regardless of whether or not you make the cut – you can at least have another way to shamelessly promote yourself.

The point is this – as budding authors breaking into the field, and readers who enjoy the medium, we should be helping each other out.  It’s staggering to see how many readers out there won’t even give an indie author a chance.  One hand washes the other.  Even if you don’t have a big budget, take some time and find an indie author (many of their eBooks are free and many more just cost a couple dollars) and give them a try.

That’s it for today.  Tomorrow we will start hammering away on writing tips again and get back into the old grind.  Until then, keep reading, keep writing, and as always – stay sharp!

  1. Hi,

Well, I didn’t know that is a holiday for us indie authors. ^_^ Thank you for writing this post and helping out your friend. I will definitely check out his work.

I would love to share a blurb about my novella which will be available on August 1, 2016.

“One pill every 7 hours, could give Chanel the chance to finally see the world around her. Chanel is a independent nineteen year old, despite what her overprotective mother and senator father may think. Being the daughter of a senator comes with it’s own problems, a simple afternoon out with friends soon becomes overwhelming when reporters swarm around Chanel.

Keeping her secret of taking experimental pills close to her chest she is able to fool everyone, except for her hawk-eye bodyguard that has now been assigned to protect her.

Chanel doesn’t want a bodyguard, but will she get more than she bargained for?”

  2. I didn’t know there was such a holiday 🙂 Maybe next year after I publish my first book, I can join the fun. I wish all the indie authors the best! Don’t give up on finding readers for your books 🙂

    • Glad I could do my little part to spread the word. The few I know personally struggle for readership – and it’s a shame because their work is solid. I’ll keep my eyes open for your work when it hits the stands.

  3. Wow, somehow I missed this holiday. Maybe it was because I was unplugged and remote camping that first week of July. But, now I’m excited that there is an indiepride day. I love it! I’m Alexis Rose and my book is titled, Untangled, A Story of Resilience, Courage, and Triumph. This book is my memoir. It’s a book about facing my first 20 years in unimaginable circumstances but written as a “page-turner” with the focus on feelings vs explicit details. It is a book written with hope all the way through it, and how I now live my life with courageously in the face of PTSD. I thought it would be a niche book for trauma survivors and those who support them, but I have been pleasently surprised that it has crossed over into all genres of readers. I hope you enjoy it!! https://www.amazon.com/Untangled-story-resilience-courage-triumph-ebook/dp/B013XA4856

    • When I get settled in tonight I will snag a copy of this for sure. As a veteran with plenty of friends dealing with different levels of PTSD, I feel like this book will resonate well with me. I also love a story about struggle and redemption.

Thanks for sharing, I will update your information into this post tonight and link your information into the post! Best of luck in your future work!

      • Thank You so much!!! I havent received any feedback thats the book is triggering for PTSD sufferers, more relateable because I tried to stick with how things felt/feel. I really look forward to your feedback after you read Untangled. Take good care! Alexis

  4. What makes this great is the follow through. When I say “I’ll buy your book,” I buy the book. I read it. I won’t post reviews of books I didn’t like unless the author asks. But if I thought it was ok, I review it. I wish more people were out there like you, Corey because you always follow up. You’re giving a lot of indie authors (like me) an opportunity, and that’s wonderful of you. Thanks for updating us!

    • I love to help bud, you know this probably better than most. While my dream is to publish traditionally, I have great respect for indie authors and their work. My soul won’t be shattered if this is the route I end up taking. Despite the power of the publisher, a book is only as good as its words. Sometimes I grab a book from a big name publisher and go, “How the heck did this get published by these guys,” and sometimes I read an indie author (like yourself) and say, “How has this person not been scooped up by a big name publisher?” Despite the labels, I believe in the written word. The origin matters less than the story.

Mini-rant aside, thanks for the kind words and acknowledging my efforts. Hopefully some people steer toward your book – I feel it’s a great story.

  5. I too did not know of this holiday, and I’m glad to know it now. I try to read as much as I can and have several indie authors I try to follow through their blogs. I wish to be traditionally published and have a few books written that need to go through the editing process. Hopefully, I will have that done by the end of the year. I do have a few novella/short stories I have published on my own. One is free and another is 99 cents. Both tales are crime fiction, and you can check them out if you like:
    Frank Winston – http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TGCNOU6
    and
    Yes to Maybe – https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/637414
Thanks for letting people know about this. Please write a review wether you liked it or not if you choose one of them to read.
    Thanks again.

    • Glad I was able to spread the word. That way next July 1st you’ll be ready to do hashtag battle.

I looked at your books and went ahead and snagged a copy of Frank Winston. I will post a link into this post for others to check out.

Good luck as you dive into the editing process with your next work, hopefully you are able to knock an agent over the head and make them yours.

  6. Thanks for the awesome tip! I’m planning on self publishing my books by the end of the year, so I haven’t quite gotten this far yet, but I look forward to it, and if I’m lucky, I look forward to supporting other indie writers when I have a little extra cash ; )
